teacher profile | teaching materials

Programme

Traffic and Transportation Engineering is a course of the Transportation sector, given within the three years of the Degree in Civil Engineering. This degree aims at providing tools for the design, construction, maintenance and management of civil structures and infrastructures, such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, transport systems, hydraulic works and land protection.

As part of the Bachelor's degree program, the Traffic and Transportation Engineering course aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge for the analysis, design and management of the main transport systems, in particular road and rail systems. The aim is to train professionals capable of

contributing to the realisation of efficient, safe and sustainable mobility, both for the transport of people and freight.

Transport systems are analysed in their complexity, considering their interactions with the territory and evaluating their technical, economic and environmental aspects. The course provides solid competences in the following areas:

- Vehicle and route interaction in road and rail transport

- Traffic modelling: study of vehicle flow and congestion phenomena (e.g. stop&go models)

- Mobility demand analysis: traffic flow simulation methods;

- Performance evaluation: tools for measuring the efficiency and impact of a transport system; operation and impact of thermal and electric motors;

- Calculation of Level of Service (LOS) of infrastructure elements;

- Railway systems: characteristics of infrastructure, services and technologies;

In-person attendance highly recommended

Type of evaluation

The exam consists of a written test with three open exercises to solve, each exercise is worth 10 points. A passing grade is achieved with at least two correct exercises.
