- General characteristics of computer networks: distances, terminology, type of information exchange, transmission media, switching, speed, resource management, fault tolerance, standards- The ISO/OSI reference model and layered network architectures.
- The IEEE 802 project: architecture, the MAC sublayer, and the LLC sublayer.
- Ethernet and the IEEE 802.3 standard.
- The Wireshark traffic analyzer.
- Functions and technical characteristics of switches (bridges); "store-and-forward" operation; learning process.
- Wi-Fi and the IEEE 802.11 standard.
- The data-link layer beyond LANs; access and aggregation networks.
- The network layer and the IPv4, ARP, and IPv6 protocols; subnetting; unicast and broadcast traffic.
- ICMP and ICMPv6 protocols; the `ping` and `traceroute` commands and their implementation.
- The transport layer and the TCP and UDP protocols; sequence numbers and states.
- The Domain Name System (DNS).
- HTML; URLs and the HTTP protocol.
- Electronic mail (email).
Note: With the exception of Wi-Fi networks and electronic mail, the topics listed above are accompanied by laboratory exercises conducted using the Kathara network emulator.
