Road and Railway Pavements is a course of the Master Degree in Road Infrastructures and Transport. This degree aims at training a highly professional figure in civil engineering with specific knowledge and skills in road infrastructures design and management and transportation issues.
Within this degree, Road and Railway Pavements is aimed at providing students with the knowledge and understanding of the elements for design, management and maintenance of road and railway pavements.
The main topics concern: principles of structural design of flexible and rigid road pavements, the analysis of the surface defects and their effects on road safety and comfort; the analysis of the changes over the time of the defects; maintenance strategies.
At the end of the course the students will be able to: 1) carry out mix design procedures for road pavements using Marshall and volumetric design methods 2) design bituminous and concrete pavement structures by means of empirical and mechanistic design methods 3) perform procedures of quality control for road pavements; 4) characterize the performances of road pavements by means of methods for collecting pavement condition data and indicators; 5) analyze the road pavements damages and define the maintenance interventions.
