The course is aimed at giving the students the basics of machine design focusing on design of constructive elements and components of machines.

Programme

The course aims to provide the methods for designing mechanical structures and selecting machine components.
The course program covers the following topics:
- Mechanical design in the presence of static loads (Cauchy stress tensor, safety coefficients, Möhr circle, Yield criteria for metals, stress concentration factors)
- Fatigue design
- Mechanical testing of materials (Tensile Testing, Hardness Testing, Creep Testing, Impact Testing, Non Destructive Testing, Fractography)
- Plain, ball and roller bearings
- Hydrodynamic Bearings
- Mechanical shaft-hub connection
- Fastening and Joint Design (welding, nailing and adhesive bonding)
- Spring sizing and selection
