20810352 - Elements of anatomy and physiology

To let the student know the principles of cellular physiology and the principles of the functioning of the cardiovascular and nervous systems, and to know the anatomical organisation of the main tissues and organs; to let the student acquire the appropriate physiological terminology and know the essential parameters to assess those systems; to integrate the gained knowledge to know the function of excitable cells; to know how to use tools to evaluate physiological and neurophysiological mechanisms.

Curriculum

Programme

PHYSIOLOGY MAIN CONCEPTS - HOMEOSTASIS, FEEDBACK, STRUCTURE/FUNCTION RELATIONSHIPS, CHANGES OVER THE LIFESPAN
CELL PHYSIOLOGY - SUBSTANCE PASSAGE THROUGH THE MEMBRANE, OSMOSIS, ELECTRICAL PHENOMENA OF THE MEMBRANE
HISTOLOGY PRINCIPLES. SKELETAL SYSTEM
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM - ORGANIZATION, ACTION POTENTIAL OF A NERVE CELL, REFRACTORY PERIODS, PROPAGATION OF NERVE IMPULSE, SYNAPSES, REFLEX ARC, NEUROTRANSMITTERS AND RECEPTORS, HORMONES.
ORGAN FUNCTIONS, THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM - MECHANICS OF MUSCLE CONTRACTION, SMOOTH MUSCLE FUNCTIONS
RESPIRATION: PHYSIOLOGY OF RESPIRATION: VENTILATION, GAS EXCHANGE
RENAL FUNCTION: FILTRATION, REABSORPTION, WATER AND ELECTROLYTE BALANCE
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM - BLOOD FUNCTIONS, HEART, CARDIAC CYCLE, BLOOD PRESSURE AND ITS REGULATION

Attendance

Strongly recommended

Type of evaluation

During the course, there are two self-assessment moments followed by two written tests. The average score of the two tests represents the final grade. For those who prefer to take a single test at the end of the course, there is the possibility of being assessed with a final oral exam covering the entire program
