20810103 - SICUREZZA STRADALE E GRANDI RISCHI

Road Safety and Severe Hazards is a course of the Master Degree in Road Infrastructures and Transport. This degree aims at training a highly professional figure in civil engineering with specific knowledge and skills in road infrastructures design and management and transportation issues.
Within this degree, Road Safety and Severe Hazards is aimed at providing students with the knowledge and understanding of the management of road infrastructures safety by means of an interdisciplinary approach (safe system approach) that tackle road safety issues using several measures to improve drivers behaviour, road design and maintenance and vehicle safety. Students will be familiar with road safety plans and programs, protocols and procedure for develop road safety inspections and audit in accordance with international and national actual rules and regulations in this field.
At the end of the course the students will be able to: 1) identify the highest risk sites for a priority of interventions in the road network; 2) make a road safety inspection in urban environment; 3) write a report of the road safety inspection developed; 4) identify the most critical risk factors of a road sites using crash data (reactive approach) or on site survey (pro-active approach) and select the most effective safety countermeasures able to improve the safety level of the site.

Programme

The course is aimed at providing students with the knowledge and instruments for developing road safety analyses, audit and inspections according to the national and international actual regulations.

Specifically, during the lectures, it will be presented and discussed:
1) the most recent and effective methods and procedures for studying crash data, identifying crash factors and possible countermeasures, evaluating the effectiveness of road safety measures;
2) plans and programs for the management of the safety of road infrastructures;
3) the most advanced and effective technologies and tools used for improving road safety, according to a multidisciplinary approach based on driver-road-vehilce interactions: the driving simulation.

Moreover, some basic concept on the risk management of transport network related to critical event such as earthquakes, floods, fires... will be presented.

Finally, some seminars are expected by road safety experts.

Core Documentation

Teacher's lectures and digital materials (i.e. video of the lectures).

Type of delivery of the course

The course consists in 36 lessons in class. Each lecture is recorded by the professor who then upload the video and other materials useful for the students in Moodle platform. Should the COVID-19 emergency continue, the course will implement all the indications provided by the university. If needed, video-lectures will be broadcast and recorded, with the appropriate modes of interaction with students, on site or remote.

Type of evaluation

The evaluation is based on the report of a road safety inspection that the students will develop during the course and on a presentation of the activities performed. Should the COVID-19 emergency continue, the course will implement all the indications provided by the university. The oral exams will be developed by means of Microsoft Teams.
