20710284 - LEARNING A SECOND LANGUAGE: PATHS, STRATEGIES, ABILITIES (LLE)

Knowledge of the researches on second language (L2) learning process, both spontaneous and teacher-driven, with particular reference to the language aspects involved in the development of the ability to use a second language and their order of acquisition: variability, systematicity and internal/external factors leading to acquisition. Development of metalinguistic reflection as a necessary step to consciously and effectively learn foreign languages.
In-depth analysis of the process involved in the development of the second language competence, paying particular attention to the role of context, input, learning strategies.
The course deals also with the paramount role of receptive skills (listening and reading) using examples from the various languages taught at the Department and Italian schools (including Italian for foreigners).

Programme

The first part of the course aims to give the basic notions of second language learning processes, with special reference to spontaneous language learning and to interlanguage development, as well as to metalinguistic reflection. In the second part, the course focuses on the development of competence in using various linguistic skills in a second language through an analysis of the Common European Framework of Reference. The course provides an introduction to the concepts of plurilingual education and intercomprehension.
