One of the main aims of this Course of Study is to provide students with advanced knowledge of two foreign literatures related to the two languages of their choice, paying special attention to intercultural and transcultural dynamics. The course also aims at refining their ability to interpret cultural phenomena, using the tools and methodologies of literary, cultural and historical analysis.
Spanish Literature I is among the characterizing activities of the "Foreign Literatures" area. It provides the student with initial knowledge and understanding of the Spanish literary culture through the reading of exemplary texts analysed paying special attention to intercultural dynamics. It helps students discover the tools and methodologies of literary, cultural and historical analysis.
At the end of the module, students will be able to read and understand literary texts in the original language employing the analytical methods and tools they will have learned in class; furthermore, they will possess the necessary communicative skills to re-elaborate the acquired disciplinary contents.

Programme

The course aims to explore the different manifestations of the tragic in Spanish theater through the analysis of some representative texts of the genre included in a wide temporal, cultural and literary horizon that goes from the 'baroque nueva' comedy to the 50s of the XX century . Basic elements of analysis of the theatrical text will be provided in its relationship with literature and representation.
The course will consist of 30 hours of lectures and 6 hours of assisted teaching activity, the calendar of which will be provided by the lecturer in class and inserted in her own teaching site.

Type of delivery of the course

Lecture-style lessons held by the professor. Students will be asked to participate actively through regular attendance and, above all, by carrying out works (written and oral) assigned by the professor during the course.

Attendance

The course attendance is optional. Non-attending students are requested to contact the professor at least two months before the exam date. In addition, they must refer to the professor’s website for additional information and for the "Temario" of the exam (that is, the thematic guidelines useful for the exam preparation).

Type of evaluation

Oral exam with possible additional materials to the programme (for non-attending students) agreed upon the basis of what has been done during the course. For the exam preparation a "Temario" ( that is, the thematic guidelines useful for the exam preparation) is made available on the professor's website. n.b. For the duration of the Covid-19 emergency, the oral exam will be carried out through the use of the Microsoft Teams platform.

The program aims to introduce students to the theatrical phenomenon in the Spain of Siglo de Oro, through the reading, commentary and dramaturgical analysis of three canonical texts by Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca.

Type of delivery of the course

1) General part (key concepts of literary history and analysis of theatrical text, lectures and individual study). 2) Exercises of dramaturgical analysis of the theatrical texts in the program (works to be presented in the classroom, assessable for the final exam). 3) Examples of reading and interpretation of theatrical texts in the program (lectures and classroom exercises).

Attendance

Non-attending students will have to refer to a specific program, with self-learning materials available on the Moodle platform. For this reason, all those who consider that they cannot attend, even partially, are invited to contact the professor at least two months before the exam date, in order to have the necessary indications to access the platform.

Type of evaluation

The ongoing evaluation will be conducted through individual works that will be assigned in the classroom. The oral exam will evaluate the general knowledge (point 1 of the program) and the acquired competences (points 2 and 3). The final grade will consist of 20% of the result of the ongoing evaluation and 80% of the result of the oral exam.
