The 2nd yr Language and Translation course of Non-European language, comes under the core educational activities (Specialist languages, advanced language competences and linguistic mediation from/to languages of study) of the bachelor’s degree course in Languages and Cultural & Linguistic Mediation, specifically those activities aimed at providing effective operational competence at the levels established for the Non-European language as well as the theoretical knowledge of the specialist languages, of the language and mediation activities and strategies , particularly in plurilingual contexts.
The course aims at providing:
-the achievement of competencies equivalent to the B1 level - Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) 2018 (https://rm.coe.int/cefr-companion-volume-with-new-descriptors-2018/1680787989), for all skills through reception, production, interaction, written and spoken mediation activities as well as their related strategies.
Deepening of the metalinguistic reflection also at comparative level: structural and typological aspects, sociolinguistic aspects, introduction to the study of language history.
Introduction to the knowledge and use of some lexicographic resources. (dictionaries, corpora and concordances)
Expected learning results: students will be able to use their first foreign language at a level equivalent to B1 level - Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) 2018 (https://rm.coe.int/cefr-companion-volume-with-new-descriptors-2018/1680787989), they will be able to use the corresponding communicative strategies; they will be able to carry out metalinguistic reflection activities in a comparative perspective; they will learn and start using, at basic level, some lexicographic resources, for language study; they will have basic notions on communication and intercultural mediation; they will apply acquired knowledge to the analysis of short texts in the language of study.

Attendance at lectures, language practice sessions, and language laboratory activities is not compulsory; however, it is strongly recommended due to the progressive and practice-oriented nature of the course. Regular participation in teaching activities supports the consolidation of grammatical, lexical, and communicative skills, as well as the development of written and oral comprehension, production, and interaction abilities in Modern Standard Arabic. Non-attending students are required to contact the instructor in order to agree on any supplementary materials and specific examination preparation requirements.Type of evaluation
Assessment is divided into: language proficiency assessment; oral examination. Language Proficiency Assessment The language proficiency assessment is aimed at verifying the intermediate-level language skills acquired during the course and consists of several parts. The assessment may include: grammar and morphosyntactic exercises; translation of intermediate-level sentences and texts from Arabic into Italian and/or from Italian into Arabic; written comprehension and production exercises; linguistic analysis of Arabic texts; a listening comprehension test in the language laboratory aimed at assessing oral comprehension skills; a conversation test aimed at assessing oral interaction skills in Modern Standard Arabic. The assessment evaluates: knowledge of the grammatical and syntactic structures studied during the course; linguistic and lexical accuracy; written and oral comprehension skills; translation and text-processing skills; written production skills; oral interaction skills in Arabic. Passing the language proficiency assessment is a necessary requirement in order to take the oral examination. Oral Examination The oral examination consists of an interview aimed at assessing: advanced knowledge of the linguistic topics covered during the course; grammatical, syntactic, and lexical analysis skills; comprehension, analysis, and translation of the texts studied; knowledge of the linguistic and cultural aspects of the contemporary Arab world. During the interview, students may be required to: read, analyze, and comment on Arabic texts; explain grammatical and syntactic structures; provide linguistic and lexical commentary on the texts covered during the course; discuss topics addressed during the lectures.
