The aim of the course is to provide knowledge and skills that allow the student to know how to orientate himself in the panorama of issues concerning hygiene and social medicine, with particular regard to health, epidemiological and social impact aspects.

At the end of the course the student:
- has become familiar with the basic concepts of hygiene and social medicine.
- is able to critically orient itself between the different models of health systems, the fundamental means to prevent the main infectious and multifactorial diseases, the timing of prevention, elements of occupational safety, as well as the principles of health education and health promotion of single and community.

- Scope and definition of Hygiene and Social Medicine
Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention
- Primary and secondary prevention: theory and applications
Notions of epidemiology, how sanitary phenomena are measured
- How scientific evidence is constructed: introduction to the main types of epidemiological study
- Notions of demography, social and health impact of aging, children.
- Epidemiology of infectious diseases, transmission, with examples on pathologies with a high social impact
- Epidemiology of chronic-degenerative diseases, the example of neoplasia, metabolic diseases
Prophylaxis of infectious diseases
- Natural history of infectious diseases
- Vaccines and principles of immunology
National Health Service
- History and founding principles
- Current structure and regulations
- Basic health care: health district, general doctor, social assistance
- Health education
Occupational Safety
- Epidemiology of Occupational risk
- National and European references for health and safety at work
Role of the lifestyle on health: ex. nutrition, alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, addictions, environment
Health in sub-groups of population and age groups (maternal-child,.. etc.)

Type of delivery of the course

In order to achieve the expected learning outcomes, lectures will mainly be carried out. Exercises and seminars will be carried out as a support method and to strengthen basic knowledge (eg frontal lessons, exercises and seminars). Attendance is not compulsory but strongly recommended.

Type of evaluation

The verification of the learning takes place through an oral test varying in time from 20 to 30 minutes and consists of three questions, one of which is chosen by the student.
