The aim of the course is to provide students with the basics and tools of functional sociological theory and research to promote processes of analysis and understanding of the social significance that the themes of democracy and citizenship play in today's welfare systems.

At the end of the course the student acquired the ability to reflect critically on the foundations and structures of today's welfare systems using the concepts and tools of sociology.

Programme

Welfare and community welfare are crucial issues in analysing the dynamics of modern democracies. In particular, the relationship among welfare, citizenship and work is fundamental, and need a gender perspective. Sociological thinking is central to critically read of welfare local experiences, as well as analysing the participation and social activism of people and communities. During the course the study of inequalities will be crucial, and it will give relevance to build skills for analysing local welfare experiences and examining participation, mobilization and campaigning processes aimed at strengthening resilient and democratic communities.

The final exam consists of a project related to the teaching themes. The project can be integrated with an oral exam.
