Programme

The SOCIAL POLICY course provides a historical and theoretical framework for the concepts of social policy and the welfare system, describing the main models. It then explores how social change and changing needs impact the structure of social policies, and presents the framework of the social protection system's actors. The transition from the welfare state to the welfare mix and the concept of local welfare are illustrated. Social protection sector policies (social security, healthcare, assistance, and social services) are also described, providing a general overview and their profile in the Italian context. Finally, possible future scenarios for social policies in Italy are discussed.

Type of evaluation

The exam consists of a written section and, upon successful completion, an oral section. The written test consists of three open-ended questions formulated with reference to three thematic areas covered in the course syllabus: 1. the general framework of social policies; 2. the characteristics of the Italian social protection system; 3. sectoral social policies. Answers must be consistent with the questions posed. The proposed topics are deliberately broad and allow for detailed responses. Providing extremely basic answers will therefore result in a deduction in the assessment. Assessment will be based on the content presented, as well as the form of the response. Therefore, students are encouraged to pay attention to the composition of the text, which must be clear and logically, syntactically, and grammatically correct. The oral exam will be held in the days following the oral exam and will cover the entire course syllabus.
