Specific objectives carried out during the course are the following:
- identify theoretical and methodological framework as regards empirical and experimental research;
- define a problem for research;
- design and project hypotheses in educational research;
- identify the main research tools;
- learn how to critically redraft hypotheses;
- identify paths to solve educational issues.


Through the course of Methodological reserach in Education, students will be able:
In terms of knowledge and understanding:
- knowledge of the main theoretical foundations of research in educational context;
- knowledge of the main phases of the educational research process;
- knowledge of the main analysis tools and evaluation methods in education.
In terms of applying knowledge and understanding:
- ability to define hypothesis in the educational research context;
- ability to use the main data collection tools;
- ability to use the main tools for analyzing and evaluating data.
In terms of making judgements
- ability to formulate research projects in the educational context that respond to the educational needs of a given situation;
- ability to formulate judgments on experimental educational situations.
In terms of communication skills
- ability to present the objectives and phases of an educational research project in an orderly and reasoned way;
- ability to critically expose the analyses and evaluations of an experimental research project in educational context.
In terms of learning skills:
- willingness to explore the perspectives of research in education.

Programme

The teaching will focus on the main themes of educational research. The main contents of the course will be structured according to three macro temporal articulations:
1. Theory: Doing research in education; quantitative research and qualitative research: key characteristics and concepts; educational research strategies; the phases of research in education; the construction of the theoretical framework; from hypotheses to operational definitions of research; the collection, analysis and interpretation of data.
2. In-depth study: educational research in the field of museums; the characteristics of museum teaching and research in the context of the use of artistic and cultural heritage. Presentation of some examples of educational research in museums carried out in different international contexts.
3. Laboratory. Laboratory activities on educational research to be used at a distance through the platform of the department formonline.uniroma3.it
All the contents of the course will be subject to final evaluation.

Type of delivery of the course

The course will be composed of frontal classroom lectures on the theoretical principles of Research in Education. Seminars and case studies will be organized in order to analyze the characteristics of Research in museum education context and examine different experiments carried out in national and international research contexts. An online laboratory, accessible through the platform formonline.uniroma3.it, will allow students, through individual and group exercises and tasks, to deepen the practical aspects of educational research in different education contexts.

Type of evaluation

The evaluation test is a written test composed by 40 closed questions. It lasts 40 minutes. The test is aimed at evaluate the students' knowledge acquired and the ability to use content in real education contexts.
