The course provides students with theoretical knowledge on human development in different domains (cognitive, social, emotional) and operational tools to apply that knowledge to the educational context.


Knowledge and understanding of:
- the main theoretical models on development and learning processes;
- the main theoretical models of the teaching-learning dynamics;
- the research methods used in developmental and educational psychology;
- the cognitive, social, and emotional development from infancy to early adolescence;
- the psychological processes involved in the major acquisitions of preschool and primary school children.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
- ability to analyze school situations according to theories and psychological processes;
- ability to analyze learning contexts according to theories and psychological processes.
Making judgements:
- aptitude to find connections between psychological theories and school situations;
- aptitude for interpreting pupils' needs in psychological terms;

Programme

The course introduces to the theoretical approaches and the main concepts of developmental and educational psychology. The first part aims to provide the student with the presentation of the discipline and of its methods of study, the nature of childhood, the biological and environmental factors in the development. The second part presents the different aspects of child development: social and relational, cognitive, linguistic and communicative, and emotional. The third part deals with instruction and education by referring to different theoretical perspectives. Finally, the course approaches some basic learning, such as representing, reading, writing and conceptualizing.

Type of delivery of the course

The course includes lectures, supported by the use of power point slides and videos. During the lessons, moments will be dedicated to the collective discussion with the aim of bringing out students' opinions, experiences and knowledge, and to activate reflections on the application of the topics addressed to the school context. Students have also the opportunity to present to the class specific topics, agreeing with the teacher on the contents and texts. On the formonline platform there will be an environment dedicated to the course in which the power point presentations used in the lectures will be made available, communications will be inserted, and discussion topics will be activated with sharing of materials.

Attendance

It is strongly recommended to follow the lessons to acquire the specific terminology of developmental and educational psychology, to understand how psychology is applied to school, to reflect in group on the proposed themes.

Type of evaluation

Following the measures to combat and contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus and until the normal academic situation has been restored, the exam will take place in written and oral form, remotely, as governed by DR 703. The exam includes a written test and an oral interview, which will take place in two distinct moments. The written test to answer 30 multiple choice questions in 30 minutes, with 4 answer options (one correct answer). The oral interview focuses on the contents of the written test and aims to confirm the grade of the written test (without further questions) or supplement it (with a question). For the written test, the use of: formonline + LockDown-Respondus + Teams is provided. The necessary technological equipment (as indicated on the student portal) is the following: • PC with camera and microphone for formonline + LockDown-Respondus • Smartphone / Tablet for Teams • Internet connection The oral will take place with an audio-video connection through Teams. Booked students will be distributed in shifts according to the number of booked. Other organizational indications will be published on the formonline platform at the expiry of the bookings for each appeal and communicated via GOMP.
