At the heart of the educational experience lies a radical question: how can one live well? Not in the sense of efficiency, success, or personal gratification, but in the fullest sense of being human: how can one live justly, authentically, and happily?
This course aims to explore, in an interrogative and dialogical manner, the theme of human action when it aspires to be ethical. Together, we will reflect on what it means today to be a virtuous person, in the profound sense that Aristotle attributed to areté: not merely a possession of moral qualities, but a constant striving toward the fulfilled form of being human.
In doing so, we will allow ourselves to be questioned by the mimetic dimension of action: for one can act well only if one is capable of feeling, imagining, and representing the other within oneself. Mimesis, understood as the poetic capacity of the soul, is the first ethical act: it is the ability to embody what we are not yet, to feel within oneself what is other than oneself. Thus, good action is always preceded by right imagination.
We will explore the following thematic nodes:
Virtue as habit and deliberate choice: what does it mean to cultivate an inner disposition toward the good? How is the will educated?
The role of mimesis in the construction of ethics.
The importance of friendship as a mirror and school of the ethical: why one cannot be virtuous alone.
Happiness (eudaimonia) not as mere pleasure, but as the realization of being-in-relation – with oneself, with others, with the world.
Alongside philosophical texts, we will be accompanied by a selection of films that will help us understand how the good is learned and enacted, not only through rules, but through visions, examples, and embodied practices.
