Course Description
The course is grounded in a fundamental question that runs through educational thought, literature, and cinema:
How does it become possible to understand another person and, through the other, to arrive at a deeper understanding of oneself?
Human beings reveal themselves, first and foremost, as expressive beings. Every gesture, every word, every silence, every face represents an attempt to give form to one's inner life. Yet no expression ever fully coincides with what it seeks to manifest. From this original distance arise misunderstanding, conflict, and solitude, but also the possibility of listening, recognition, and genuine encounter.
Luigi Pirandello's Novelle per un anno (Short Stories for a Year) constitute the central laboratory of the course. Through a complete reading of the collection, students will be guided to explore the fundamental questions of human existence not as merely literary themes, but as essential experiences of education.
The pedagogical reflection will be developed through the reading of In-tendere. Pirandello come educatore poetico, Per un'ermeneutica dell'educativo. L'insegnamento scritto (e quello non scritto) di Edda Ducci, and Così se vi pare. Una lettura pedagogica. These works provide the theoretical categories necessary to understand expression as the original locus of the educational relationship and education itself as an experience of interpretation, encounter, and transformation.
The course will also be enriched by the viewing and discussion of selected masterpieces of contemporary cinema—Drive My Car by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, Her by Spike Jonze, Three Colours: Red by Krzysztof Kieślowski, Paris, Texas and Perfect Days by Wim Wenders, and Wings of Desire by the same director. Through the language of moving images, these films reopen the same fundamental questions concerning identity, listening, solitude, responsibility toward the other, and the possibility of authentic encounter.
Literature, pedagogy, and cinema will thus converge in a single educational journey in which the study of works of art becomes an exercise in interpreting human experience and an opportunity to cultivate a more conscious, sensitive, and responsible way of relating to oneself, to others, and to the world.
The course aims to provide students not only with the tools for critical analysis but, above all, with an educational experience in which understanding means learning to dwell within the other's expression, recognizing in it the very condition of human coexistence and of education itself.

The assessment consists of an oral examination divided into two parts. Students will begin by delivering an individual presentation of no more than 10 minutes, conceived as a conference paper on the course topic. The presentation should provide an original and well-argued synthesis of the course, critically integrating Luigi Pirandello's Novelle per un anno, the required theoretical readings, and the films discussed during the course. The presentation will be followed by an oral discussion with the instructor, aimed at assessing the student's knowledge of the course contents, critical thinking, and independent judgment. Assessment will be based on the student's knowledge of the course contents, ability to integrate them into an original and critically argued reflection, independent judgment, and clarity and effectiveness of oral communication.
