The course aims at providing a basic understanding of the shaping of the contemporary world, of the main processes of cultural, economical, institutional, political and social transformation and of essential turning points.
On the basis of the historical methodology, the course wishes to provide a critical understanding of the complexity and temporal depth of the main issues of today's world, in order to empower students to knowledgeably move within its complex reality."

Programme

The course aims at providing a basic understanding of the crucial turning points and most relevant processes of cultural, economic, institutional, political and social transformation of contemporary history. A section of the course will be devoted to the history of Postwar Italy since the end of Second World War to the present day, with a focus on the “Constitutional question” in Italy.

Main contents: The First World War and its consequences; The Age of Totalitarianism; The Second World War; The Holocaust; The Cold War: main phases; The process of decolonization; The economic boom and the affluent society; Postwar Italy: centrismo, Center-Left, national solidarity and pentapartito; The “Constitutional question” in Italy; The “Shock of the Global” and its effects on the political, economic, institutional, cultural and social sphere; The digital revolution; The collapse of Communism and the new international order after the Cold War; The evolution of the political system in Italy after the collapse of the “Republic of the parties”; Politics in the XX century and its evolution. The State, the parties and the Welfare State: apogee and crisis; New scenarios and challenges in the XXI century.

Type of evaluation

The assessment takes the form of an oral exam. The exam consists of several questions aimed at verifying the student's level of knowledge. The evaluation is based on the following criteria: knowledge of the main contents of the program; clarity, efficacy and accuracy of the vocabulary used by the student; the ability to show a critical approach.

Programme

The course has three parts:
a) the first is an introduction to historical knowledge, its methodological issues and its political use. It examines the overarching phenomena of the contemporary age with their interpretative challenges.
b) the second, more specialised, looks in depth at Italy's political history in twentieth century.
c) the third one, only for student of the Governo e Amministrazione (L 16) stream, is about the history of the Italian State, its articulations and its challenges, from the unification up until today.

Type of delivery of the course

Lectures with the help of audiovisuals. The method aims to give students the fundamental knowledge to reach the educational goals and encourages the active participation of students.

Attendance is strongly recommended but it is not mandatory.

Type of evaluation

The contemporary history exam aims at verifying the student's knowledge and understanding of the programme's content. The clarity of the presentation, the synthetic and analytical skills and the language competency will form part of the evaluation. The exam is composed of two parts: A) the first, a written test, covers the knowledge of general history from the 19th Century to the present. It consists of 30 multiple choice questions and requires accurate knowledge of basic historical facts, and specifically of the book from Sabbatucci-Vidotto. For the written test do not book on GOMP. You need to register on MOODLE on the lecturer's page. There you can find detailed instructions on how to take the test, and the dates and times it will take place. There will be a test before each oral session and, if passed, it will remain valid for one academic year: for example, if passed in a summer session, it will remain valid until the winter session included. During this time it will be possible to complete the exam by taking the oral test at any session available. Test lasts 20 minutes and it is passed with a minimum of 20 correct answers. B) Only the students who passed the first part will be admitted to the second one, which is an oral exam. The questions will be around the other texts that are part of the programme. The final grade will be the given by the (non-mathematical) average between the written and the oral tests.
