21801920 - HISTORY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY POLITICAL THEORY

The course aims to provide analytical tools to assess the historical-political relationship between democracies and peace. Starting from the second post-war period, the critical issues relating to democratic ideas (and practices) will be framed, as a pivotal role in the balance of the international system and as a guarantee of coexistence within the State and between States based on law.

Reflection on democracy and reflection on peace become, from different starting points, privileged points of observation, above all to understand the current quality of political coexistence and to indicate possible lines of conduct in an international system increasingly marked by instability.

Programme

The course is divided into three parts.
The first one is dedicated to Kantian reflection on the relationship between republic and peace, in particular on the role that constitutionalism can play inside and outside the State to guarantee (universal) protection of rights.
From the contextualization of the Kantian project will be evaluated its ability to provide analytic tools also for contemporary democracy.
The second part wil show some problematic issues of current democracy, also in its impact on the international system.
The third part is dedicated to some contemporary authors who have reworked the Kantian paradigm or have tried to find alternative reading keys to the democracy-peace binomial.

Type of delivery of the course

Lessons will take place using frontal teaching, during which the active participation of students will be encouraged, even with appropriate space of discussion on the addressed topics. For this reason, it will be recommended to combine classroom hours with home study, in order to gradually improve the exam preparation.

Attendance

Class attending is noncompulsory, but strongly recommended. Attending students must be present at least 56 hours of lessons: attendance will be verified at the end of each lesson with a signature sheet.

Type of evaluation

For all students assessment will take place through an oral exam, which will verify the skills gained, with at least one question on each of the three parts of the course; presentation maturity, lexical appropriateness and ability to link historical context and political thinkers will be particularly appreciated. Attending students may perform evaluation tests on the program carried out at the end of the first and second part of the course; they will concur to the final evaluation during the oral exam. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to the exceptional circumstances caused by the Coronavirus emergency, all oral examinations, during Summer session 2020, will take place via MS Team video conference.
