The course aims to develop a conceptual framework for understanding contemporary social movements in Latin America, especially those taking place in the last two decades.

Programme

During the course will be analysed some social movements that have the particularity of emphasise the collective identity, values and lifestyles, rather than on previously defined ideological bodies, and are not so much aligned with or supported by organised social sectors. The incidence of various factors in the emergence, persistence and decline of these social movements will be explored: such as the modality of government intervention, the change of economic structuring and labour reorganisation, the rituals of the landless movement in Brazil, the peasant movement in Ecuador, the human rights movement in Argentina, and also the "underclass" in Argentina.

Type of evaluation

The oral exam is carried out through questions to verify the knowledge of all the texts of the program. The final judgment will be: the knowledge of the contents of the requested arguments; exposure mode;the ability to critically analyse themes; linguistic mastery.
