21810334 - ANTHROPOLOGY OF GLOBALISATION

The course aims at introducing students to the most important concepts and methods used by anthropologists in understanding socio-cultural diversity into globalisation processes. This course will additionally highlight to various approaches that form ethnographic practice: participant observation and fieldwork, multi-sited perspective and analysing the postures (gender ethnography in the local and global contexts).

Programme

The course will focus on the Rwandan Tutsi genocide of 1994 and the analysis of the post-genocide period, with a focus on gender-based violence and the difficult process of reconciliation.
It will begin with an analysis of the causes that led to the genocide from the colonial period through the lens of historical and gender anthropology, and then focus on field analysis in the post-genocide period on the themes of justice (gacaca courts), rape, memory and the role of local politics in relation to global dynamics.
An integral part of the course will be the class viewing and anthropological interpretation of some ethnographic documentaries and films.

For students in attendance: 1 - Final examination based on open questions or written text. The final grade will be 80% based on the written tests and 20% based on attendance and active participation during the course. Students who do not attend will have to sit an oral exam (max. 20 minutes).
