Programme

The course is divided into two parts: the first is dedicated to defining the concept of terrorism and providing a historical overview of its main manifestations.
Main contents: 1. The definition of terrorism 2. The causes of terrorism 3. The different types of terrorism 4. The four waves 5. The “Anarchist” Wave 6. The “Anti-colonial” Wave: 7.
The Ideological Wave 8. The “Religious” Wave and the birth of Islamist terrorism 9. al-Qaeda and ISIS 10. The response to terrorism 11. The role of the mass media .

The second part is dedicated to the historical reconstruction and scientific debate on Italian terrorism: causes, origins and its significance in national history.
Main contents:
1. The origins and causes of Italian terrorism 2. “Black” terrorism: history and characteristics 3. “Red” terrorism: history and characteristics 4. The “Moro case” and its consequences on the Italian political system 5. The Italian response to the terrorist threat

Type of evaluation

Only for students attending the course, the assessment related to the first part of the course may take the form of a mid-term exam, to be taken during the course (esonero), consisting of questions aimed at verifying the student's level of knowledge.
