20410089-1 - BIOLOGIA II - MODULO 1

Modulo I-Biochimica e Biologia Molecolare

The module aims to provide the basic notions related to the structure and function of biological macromolecules, enzymatic catalysis and cell metabolism, notions that are necessary to comprehend function of eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. Educational Objectives of the module is the acquisition of Cultural Skills, i.e. basic knowledge about the structure and function of biological macromolecules (nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids) and the mechanisms that regulate their synthesis and degradation. Furthermore, the module aims to provide basic knowledge on the mechanisms by which genetic information is conserved, transmitted and expressed. Among the Educational Objectives of the module is also the acquisition of Methodological Competences, or else the acquisition, through practical laboratory activity, of the scientific and methodological bases of important experimental techniques in the field of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The student will acquire theoretical and methodological skills that will allow him to solve specific problems in the field of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and to critically analyse and interpret scientific information.

Programme

The Course aims to provide students with basic knowledge relating to biochemistry and cellular metabolism. Carbohydrates, Lipids, Amino acids, proteins: structure of proteins and examples of structure-function relationships. Enzymes and enzymatic catalysis: Definition of active site and substrate specificity; the Michaelis-Menten equation, enzyme inhibition. Introduction to aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. Metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and nitrogen compounds. Energy production in mitochondria.
The Course also aims to provide basic knowledge of molecular biology. Purine and pyrimidine nucleotides; structure of biological macromolecules; structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic chromosomes; Replication, Transcription; Translation; Recombinant DNA and Genetically modified organisms.
Laboratory activities related to recombinant DNA technology.

Core Documentation

Recommended textbooks:
Chimica, biochimica e biologia applicata. Stefani M., Taddei N. ed. Zanichelli, 2015.
Elementi di biologia e genetica. Sadana D., Hillis DM., Heller Hc, Berenbaum Mr. Ed. Zanichelli, 2014.

Lecture notes and calculation exercises will be provided
The professor Antonini receives every day from 8.00 to 9.00 by appointment by e-mail: giovanni.antonini@uniroma3.it

The professor Cervelli receives every day from 10.00 to 11.00 by appointment by e-mail: manuela.cervelli@uniroma3.it

Type of delivery of the course

The course will take place with lectures and training in didactic laboratories.

Type of evaluation

The written test will focus on a brief description of 2-4 topics held studied the course. The score will take into account both the knowledge of the subject and the ability to present it synthetically. Mid-term tests will be carried out with the attribution of a score effective for the final vote
