Programme

Theoretical concepts concerning
- Ecology and its different forms and expressions.
- Cartography: fundamental concepts, the shape of the Earth, projections, CRS, geographic and projected systems, Datum. WGS84 and UTM.
- Geographic Information System (GIS): what it is and how it can be useful for ecology and sustainable development.
- Data types, spatial data models, Rasters and Vectors. What they represent and how they differ
- What it means to work with Rasters and Vectors. Creation of spatial models, attribute tables etc.
- Geoprocessing
- What are DEM, DTM and DSM.
- What is light, what information it carries. Electromagnetic spectrum. Sensors and acquisition bands. Radiance and reflectance, absorption spectra, spectral signatures. Manual and automatic spatial classification.

Practical part within the theoretical lessons
- Installation and use of QGIS
- Exercises on rasters and vectors. Data representation and editing, georeferencing, polynomial transformations, supervised classification etc.
- Where to find data for processing: local data, online consultation and download services.
- Examples of projects related to ecological topics
- Realising your own mini-research project

Attendance compulsory, with at least 70% attendance.

Type of evaluation

Presentation of a small research project in a maximum of 15 minutes (exceeding this minute will be evaluated negatively). Followed by general questions about the course.
