20401943 - GEOMORPHOLOGY AND LABORATORY

This course will provide the student the knowledge on the processes that shape the Earth's surface and the relative landforms. This knowledge is important to reconstruct the geological evolution in a continental environment and to study processes possibly dangerous for human beings and their activities. After taking the course the students will be able to recognize landforms generated by the interaction between surface processes and bedrock, the origin and evolution of depositional forms, the time-space relationship between the morphologies present in the landscape.

Programme

Introduction to Geomorphology; Weathering; soils; introduction to air-photo analysis; geomorphological cartography; slope processes, landforms and deposits; river processes, landforms and deposits; glacial processes, landforms and deposits; periglacial processes, landforms and deposits; karst processes, landforms and deposits; aeolian processes, landforms and deposits; tectonic geomorphology; volcanic geomorphology; planation landforms and landscape evolution models.

The laboratory activity involves the photo-interpretation of pairs of aerial photographs using a stereoscope and the creation of thematic maps. The study areas are located in central Italy (Civita di Bagnoregio, San Vito Romano, Massiccio del M. Velino, Altopiano di Castelluccio, Montefortino).

Attendance

Attendance at lectures, practical laboratory sessions, and fieldwork is governed by the Study Programme’s Teaching Regulations; please refer to these for the minimum required attendance percentages and any specific provisions applicable to particular categories of students.

Type of evaluation

The exam consists of a written test and an oral test. WRITTEN TEST (2 hours) The written test comprises 24 multiple-choice questions (1 point for a correct answer, 0 points for an incorrect answer) covering all topics addressed during the course, and 6 open-ended questions regarding aerophotogeological interpretation. ORAL TEST The oral test consists of a discussion of the written exam, with further in-depth questioning on the topics covered. The final grade takes into account the assessment of the geomorphological maps prepared during laboratory sessions.
