20401282 - PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY FOR THE LIFE SCIENCE

The course covers the key concepts of the principal topics in Chemical Physics: thermodynamics, kinetics and quantum mechanics.
These three topics cover whether or not reactions occur, how fast they go and what is actually going on at the sub-atomic scale, and will be all applied to biological problems. Students should also attain laboratory skills in spectroscopic techniques (UV-vis, FT-IR, XPS) commonly applied to the investigation of biomolecules.

Type of delivery of the course

Theoretical lessons and experiments carried out in small groups (3-4 students) with the instrumentation in the CEDIC Laboratory and Materials Chemistry Laboratory. Absorption and Emission UV-visible spectroscopy, FT-IR and IRRAS, XPS.

Type of evaluation

students are required to write scientific reports about the experiments carried out in the physical chemistry laboratory; such reports are evaluated and discussed during the oral exam.
