20402388 - URBANIZED AREAS GEOLOGY

The course aims 1) to provide methods for the study of the geological characteristics of the urban areas, identifying those geological processes whose effects could create problems not only at the regional and local levels (hazard and risk), but could affect also the condition of execution of engineering works; 2) to identify the geological processes that drove the development human activities (renewable and not renewable resources); 3) to make the students capable to plan, conduct and understand the data from underground explorations.

The course program includes the presentation and discussion of the following topics:
Definition and types of urban systems. Natural hazards and risks of urban areas. Role of geological conditions, influence of natural factors and geographical conditions on the development of urban areas. Risk, hazard, exposed value and vulnerability in urban areas, and their evolution in time. Methodology for collection, normalization and processing of drilling data. Issues and real cases applications.

The program of the course will be carried out with frontal lessons characterized by a strong interactivity during which the active participation of the students in required also thematic insights proposed by the teacher. To support the teaching, some discussions will be launched to facilitate the identification of the connections between the various topics covered. It’s planned an activity on field.

Type of evaluation

The expected methods of ascertaining the knowledge and skills acquired are: 1) the formulation of a essay on a topic of the program chosen by the student, 2) the presentation of the essay results with the support of power point. The ability to understand, to argue an answer and to defend the results achieved with the work for the essay will be evaluated.
