20410309 - BIOLOGIA MOLECOLARE AVANZATA

The course concerns the deeper general understanding of the molecular mechanisms which regulate the biological processes occurring within a cell, with particular emphasys on genetic structure, organization and expression of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.
Furthermore, the subject takes into consideration the most updated molecular biology experimental procedures utilized in basic and applied research.

Programme

THE COURSE CONCERNS THE GENERAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS WHICH REGULATE THE BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES OCCURRING WITHIN A CELL, WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASYS ON GENETIC STRUCTURE, ORGANIZATION AND GENE EXPRESSION. THE MOST ADVANCED MOLECULAR BIOLOGY METHODOLOGIES UTILIZED IN BASIC AND APPLIED SCIENCE WILL BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION. THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO THE FOLLOWING ISSUES: GENOME CONTENT; GENOME SEQUENCES AND GENE NUMBER; GENE FAMILIES AND REPETITIVE SEQUENCES; MESSENGER RNA; PROTEIN SYNTHESIS; GENETIC CODE USAGE; TRANSCRITION; OPERONS; PHAGE BIOGENESIS; REPLICON; EXTRACHROMOSAL REPLICONS; REPLICATION; RECOMBINATION; TRANSPOSONS; RTEROVIRUS AND RETROTRANSPOSONS; PROMOTERS AND ENHANCERS; TRANSCRIPTION REGULATION IN EUKARYOTS; RNA MATURATION AND SPLICING; CATALYTIC RNA; CHROMOSOMES; NUCLEOSOMES AND CHROMATIN; EPIGENETIC EFFECTS.

Type of delivery of the course

The course is composed by frontal lessons and class training. Consequently, the assessment of the oral exam is apportioned on two sections: institutional (5 CFU) and exercise (1 CFU).

Type of evaluation

Oral examination. The test is in an interview of about 30 minutes during the period the student has to answer a series of questions (5-6) including most of the topics covered during the course. Each vote takes into account the acquired knowledge (50%), the student's ability to integrate different concepts and concepts and insert them correctly in contextual problems (30%), and the ability to offer a clear language, correct to the contents (20%). The evaluation is divided in two parts: institutional (5CFU) and training (1 CFU).
