The Nutrition Biochemistry course is aimed at providing to the students the basic knowledge to understand the molecular mechanisms by which the human organism uses macro- and micro-nutrients to produce the energy needed to maintain the order which characterizes every living being.
In particular, the objectives of the course are the comprehension of the pathways through which the different groups of nutrients (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins and minerals) and other substances of natural and non-natural origin (ethanol, stimulant beverages, xenobiotics) are assimilated and transformed in the human body, and how they influence its metabolic status.
Finally, one of the aims is also that of illustrating the production of reactive oxygen species linked to metabolism and the protective role exerted by antioxidant compounds of dietary origin.

Attendance
Attendance is optional but highly recommended, as it helps students achieve positive results on the exam.Type of evaluation
Assessment will consist of two ongoing evaluations and a final oral exam on the scheduled exam dates. The final grade will evaluate the following criteria: a) The appropriateness, accuracy, and consistency of the knowledge and skills acquired; b) Appropriate use of discipline-specific terminology; c) Expressive ability; d) Logical reasoning skills; e) Ability to synthesize information; f) Ability to connect different topics. Consequently, the grade may be: a) Satisfactory (18 to 20 out of 30) b) Fair (21 to 23) c) Good (24 to 26) d) Very Good (27 to 29) e) Excellent (30) Honors are awarded to candidates who are clearly above average and whose limitations in knowledge, expression, concepts, or logic are, on the whole, entirely irrelevant.
