The course aims 1) to provide methods for the study of the geological characteristics of the urban areas, identifying those geological processes whose effects could create problems not only at the regional and local levels (hazard and risk), but could affect also the condition of execution of engineering works; 2) to identify the geological processes that drove the development human activities (renewable and not renewable resources); 3) to make the students capable to plan, conduct and understand the data from underground explorations.
Curriculum

Definition and types of urban systems. Natural hazards and risks of urban areas. Role of geological conditions, influence of natural factors and geographical conditions on the development of urban areas. Risk, hazard, exposed value and vulnerability in urban areas, and their evolution in time. Methodology for collection, normalization and processing of drilling data. Issues and real cases applications.

The program of the course will be carried out with frontal lessons characterized by a strong interactivity during which the active participation of the students in required also thematic insights proposed by the teacher. To support the teaching, some discussions will be launched to facilitate the identification of the connections between the various topics covered. It’s planned an activity on field.Attendance
Class attendance is optional but strongly recommended. Participation in fieldwork is mandatory—barring valid exceptions agreed upon with the instructor—as it is designed to foster practical and applied skills that cannot be fully acquired through individual study.Type of evaluation
The final assessment will take into account both the quality of the written report and the effectiveness of its oral presentation. Particular emphasis will be placed on the student's ability to integrate knowledge from different areas of the geosciences, to adopt a critical approach in the analysis of geological issues affecting urbanized environments, and to demonstrate independent judgment in data interpretation and in drawing conclusions. Honors will be awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding mastery of the subject matter, a high level of critical thinking, and particular originality in the development and discussion of the chosen topic. teacher profile teaching materials
