20410804 - PHARMACEUTICAL BOTANY

Develop theoretical and experimental skills in the botanical-pharmaceutical field, through the study of drugs of plant origin.
Provide the basic knowledge on the origins and development of the pharmacopoeia in its ethnobotanical origins and on the phototherapeutic use of the most important medicinal species.

Programme

Products of primary and secondary metabolism: the functional role of secondary metabolites in plants. Bioactive compounds: substances with therapeutic potential not considered nutrients in the classical sense. The biosynthetic pathways of secondary metabolites. Phenolic compounds, terpenoids, and nitrogen-containing metabolites. Production strategies: accumulation and induction. Compartmentalisation and sites of accumulation. The plasticity of secondary metabolism: endogenous and exogenous factors influencing the production of bioactive compounds. In vitro production and biotechnological processes used to enhance the production of pharmacologically active compounds in plants. Applications in phytotherapy and dietary supplements.
