teacher profile | teaching materials

Programme

The course aims to offer: a) a general introduction to the Greek historiography, in particular to Thucydides and his work; b) an introduction to the Peloponnesian War; (c) reading, contextualization and historical-critical analysis of some speeches in Thucydides, together with some epigraphs of historical content.

A) M.I. Finley, Uso e abuso della storia, Torino 1981.
B) M. Bettalli, Introduzione alla storiografia greca, Roma 2018.
C) Material and further indications will be provided by the teacher during classes.

Type of evaluation

Oral. Already during the course, each student will have to present an oral report on a topic (a speech in Thucydides or some other topic or literary/epigraphic source) agreed with the teacher. On the same theme, each student will also have to prepare a written report, which has to be informative and complete, and written according to the rules for scientific texts (the teacher will provide guidance), that will have to be delivered at least ten days before the examination. The exam will consist of a debate on the paper supplied by the student and will test the knowledge of the course contents (biography and historiographical work of Thucydides and of any other Greek historian eventually indicated, reading and historical analysis of Thucydidean passages and of inscriptions of historical content, reading of specific modern essays). The student will have to be able to proceed to a historical commentary, a correct reading, translation, grammatical and syntactic analysis of the literary and epigraphic texts in Greek language examined during the course.
