This course is designed to provide an introduction to the economic and social history of the Middle Ages via the use of sources, often in the original language.

The course aims at providing an updated framework of the Italian urban societies during the eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, with particular attention to the cities where the so-called "communal" phenomenon was more evident. Based on and interacting with the most updated historiography, the lessons will focus on configurations and types of the available sources, and analyze then the following topics: the economic growth in the West and the European political structures between the high and late middle ages; the emergence and developments of Italian city communes; urban societies and their main actors – laymen and ecclesiastics; urban economy within more broad Euro-Mediterranean economic circuits; written culture and intellectuals. The final lessons will focus on reading and commenting on a dossier of sources.
