Through the critical analysis of heterogeneous sources - such as historical maps, archival documents, iconographic and archaeological sources - we will address key issues such as the formation of borders and territorial states, the development of urban networks and communication routes, the transformation of agrarian landscapes and the spatial impact of phenomena such as colonisation and industrialisation.
The aim is to provide students with the conceptual and methodological tools to "read" the landscape as a stratified historical document. At the end of the course, they will be able to recognise the material traces of the past in the present and understand how inherited geographies continue to shape contemporary political, social and economic dynamics, developing a deeper awareness of the spatial dimension of history.
For non-attending students, the texts are as follows:
- M. Varotto, "Il primo libro di Geografia", Einaudi, 2025.
- L. Rombai, "Geografia storica dell'Italia", Le Monnier, 2002.
and one of your choice between:
- P. Piana, N. Gabellieri, A. Gallia, "Le trame del paesaggio", Viella Editore, 2025.
- A. Gallia, "Le acque del Nilo", Carocci editore, 2020.
- N. Gabellieri, A. Gallia, E. Guadagno, "Enogeografie. Itinerari geostorici e geografici dei paesaggi vitati, tra pianificazione e tutela ambientale", SGI, 2023
Programme
The Historical Geography course explores the complex and reciprocal relationship between space and time, analysing how human societies have shaped landscapes and, in turn, how geographical contexts have influenced historical processes. Going beyond the view of space as a mere inert background, the course adopts an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the transformations of the territory in a long-term perspective.Through the critical analysis of heterogeneous sources - such as historical maps, archival documents, iconographic and archaeological sources - we will address key issues such as the formation of borders and territorial states, the development of urban networks and communication routes, the transformation of agrarian landscapes and the spatial impact of phenomena such as colonisation and industrialisation.
