Programme

The course, starting from the beginning of the 20th century, will follow the development of Italian literary history on both the lyrical and narrative sides. Each author will be studied in their historical and geographical context, by some examples of reading and textual analysis of their major works.

Core Documentation

The history of Italian literature from 1900 to the 1970s is to be prepared on a manual of Italian literature (we recommend: M. Tortora, Letteratura italiana contemporanea. Narrativa e poesia dal Novecento a oggi, Carocci, 2022). A good knowledge of the following authors, is required: d’Annunzio, Deledda, Aleramo, Pirandello, Svevo, Gadda, Moravia, Pavese, Vittorini, Fenoglio, Calvino, Primo Levi, Pasolini, Elsa Morante, Manzini, de Céspedes, Ginzburg. It also requires a profile of the 20th century, as well as a good knowledge of the following authors: d’Annunzio, Marinetti, Gozzano, Saba, Ungaretti, Montale, Quasimodo, Penna, Caproni, Pasolini, Rosselli, Cavalli, la neoavanguardia.

Attending students are required to read and analyze 1 poetic collection and 1 narrative work of their choice among the listed authors (see general bibliography) in addition to the exam text and 1 critical text chosen from the list.
For students who do not attend the course the full reading of 2 poetic collections and 2 narrative works of listed authors is required (see general bibliography), in addition to the exam text text and 1 critical text chosen from the list; for Erasmus students the full reading of 1 poetic collection and 1 narrative work of listed authors (see general bibliography).

Type of evaluation

The examination will be oral. The first part of the examination will focus on the literary context of the 20th century, the second on the exam handbook and on the analysis of the works (to be chosen among the authors indicated in the general bibliography).
