The teaching of Language and Translation 1 (first language / European language) is part of the basic training activities of the "Languages of study and cultures of their respective countries" of the degree course in Languages and Language Mediation-Cultural, specifically activities aimed at providing effective operational competence at the predetermined levels for the first language, as well as theoretical knowledge on the main characteristics of the foreign language.
The course aims to provide:
Acquisition of B1+ level in all skills - v. European Reference Framework 2018 (https://rm.coe.int/cefr-companion-volumee-with-new-descriptors-2018/1680787989), through reception, production, interaction and oral and related strategies.
Introduction to metalinguistic reflection also in a comparative key: structural and typological aspects, sociolinguistic, elements of history of the language.
Introduction to the knowledge and use of some resources and tools for the study of language (dictionaries, corpora and concordance programs).
Introduction to intercultural communication and cultural-linguistic mediation.
Application of the acquired knowledge to short texts belonging to various textual genres.
Expected learning outcomes: students will be able to use the first foreign language at B1+ level, they will be able to use the relevant communication strategies; they will be able to carry out activities of metalinguistic reflection in a comparative key; they will know and begin to use tools for the study of language; they will have basic notions on communication and intercultural mediation; they will apply the acquired knowledge to the analysis of short texts in language.

This course illustrates the main phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical features of contemporary English and it also trains students in the use of monolingual dictionaries. This course also includes language improvement classes: reading, writing, listening and speaking activities leading to the required level.

The final exam includes two types of tests: 1. Language tests (B2), assessing students' oral and written language skills - reading, writing, English in use, listening and speaking skills 2. Oral exam, assessing students' knowledge of the course contents (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, history of English, dictionary use). Students must pass language tests to sit the oral exam.
