The student will gain, on the one hand, knowledge of the discipline's methodologies as a historical-archaeological source, and on the other, masterful knowledge of ancient premonet and the history of Greek and Roman coinage.

Programme

The first part of the course will outline the general methodological guidelines of the subject: the framework of numismatics as a historical and archaeological discipline; the history of studies; monetary techniques; coin types; the concept of propaganda; the artistic aspects of coins; the ponderal aspect; the legal aspects of coin issuance; the Roman mint; criteria for defining monetary chronology and place of production; the reconstruction of circulation; coins and stratigraphic excavation. The second part of the course will outline the fundamental stages in the historical evolution of ancient coins: the preparatory phases of coins; notes on primitive and archaic economies; the birth of coins; outlines of Greek numismatics; outlines of Roman numismatics. The third part of the course will feature lectures at the Capitoline Coin Cabinets and at the National Roman Museum.

Oral exam. The final grade will take into account several factors, such as: the level and quality of the student's knowledge of the topics; the ability to critically analyze a topic; the logic of the arguments supporting a thesis; the ability to apply theories and concepts to specific contexts; and the use of vocabulary appropriate to the subject being studied.
