The course aims to provide students with a basic understanding of the history of Italian literature, exploring general issues related to literary history and criticism. Its goal is to enable students to develop the ability to conduct a sound historical-critical interpretation of the works of the most important writers and the evolution of various genres.

The course aims to deepen the knowledge of literary history, with particular attention to the narrative tradition in Italy, from the Tasso's poem of Gerusalemme Liberata to the phenomenon of the prose novel of the 17th century up to its affirmation in the 19th century. In addition, the second part of the course will offer an in-depth examination of the major narrative models of the early modern period, from Manzoni to Nievo, from Scapigliatura to Verga, whose works will be analyzed and discussed.
