The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic knowledge of methods, tools and approaches of sociolinguistics, which takes into account the epistemological problems related to its proximity to other disciplines. At the end of the course, students must be able to produce a thesis that demonstrates the ability to collect data and analyze them in a sociolinguistic perspective.

Programme

This is an introductive course to sociolinguistics. The epistemological setting of this branch of knowledge will be discussed, and its basic elements and tools will be introduced. Specific attention will be paid to two major sociolinguistic approaches, i.e. correlational and interactional sociolinguistics.

Type of delivery of the course

Students can choose between a completely oral exam and an exam consisting in an essay and a couple of questions concerning the parts of the program not dealt with in the essay. The essay is expected to be about 30000 characters long. The topic must be agreed with the teacher, starting from those dealt with during the course. The essay should be structured in a first part, theoretical in nature, and a second part consisting in the analysis of data collected by the student in relation to the chosen topic. The essay must be handed in to the teacher one week before the chosen date of the exam.

Attendance

Attendance is not mandatory, but is strongly recommended.
