Programme

Francis of Assisi and the Roman Church between Catholic orthodoxy and evangelical contestation

The course intends to tackle one of the most delicate knots in the life of Francis of Assisi: what were his historical relations with the Roman Church, within which his action was in any case placed. There are two opposite historiographical traditions: one who understand Francis of Assisi as a revolutionary who wanted to radically transform the Church to bring it back to its evangelical origins, always on the verge of breaking with the ecclesiastical hierarchies, and one who, instead, strongly support his convinced orthodoxy, fully adhering to the ways and vision of the Roman Church, without any intention of renewal and without any dissent, friction or different vision of the Church itself. What really were Francis' intentions, ecclesiological attitudes, and concrete behaviour towards the curia, the bishops, the pope, priests and theologians, and, more generally, towards the ecclesiastical leadership? And what, conversely, are the postures of the representatives of the institutional Church towards Francis himself? During the course, an attempt will be made to answer these questions in the only way possible: through a careful examination of the sources available to us - Francis himself's writings, hagiographies, rules and chronicles - in order to get as close as possible to the historical truth on the two sides of this complex but fascinating relationship.

The lessons will be seminars in which we will dialogue and discuss different ideas.
