20702697 - THEORETICAL PHILOSOPHY - L.M.

The teaching of theoretical philosophy is part of the formative activities characterizing cds in Philosophical Sciences. At the end of the course the student will have acquired a thorough knowledge of the main issues addressed in the course. The student will be able to apply the acquired knowledge in discussion and argumentation both in a theoretical perspective and in a historical-philosophical perspective. The student will have acquired: - advanced capacity for critical thinking and historical contextualization in reference to the debate on self-consciousness in modern philosophy, Kantian and postkantian; - advanced language properties and argumentative skills in relation to the topics covered in the course; - ability to read and analyze sources and critical debate; - ability to write a paper on one of the course topics.

Programme

Synthetic reasoning between sense and concept

The course aims to investigate the theory of gesture understood as a dynamic and continuous process of synthesis between sense and concept. In particular, starting from an analysis of the notion of synthetic judgment, the theory of transcendental schematism and mathematical and geometrical synthesis in Kant, we will then move on to analyze the metaphysical and mathematical question of the infinite and continuum in Georg Cantor and Charles S. Peirce. Finally, a proposal of mathematical gesture as a cognitive process will be explored.

The program syllabus will unfold as follows:
- Analysis of the Kantian distinction between synthetic and analytic judgments
- Analysis of Transcendental Schematism and the Kantian idea of the construction of mathematical and geometrical synthesis
- Proposal of an interpretative hypothesis of transcendental schematism as an active and dynamic synthesis of sense and concept through gesture
- Examination of Peirce's proposal of a logic of continuity
- Examination of Poincaré's conception of mathematics
- Proposal of a hypothesis on the mathematical gesture as a cognitive process starting with Giuseppe Longo

Type of delivery of the course

The course consists of Lectures; Seminars; students' talks. Any written papers, valid for the exam, will be organized during the course and communicated through the website FILCOSPE, in the "Didactics" section of Prof. Baggio’s personal page (http://www.uniroma3.it/en/persone/SUQvVGsrWERoMUV6dHBTY0docklza0NpeEhxN2FMQkhKdlhVMGEwN1RTMD0=/insegnamenti/). In the case of an extension of the health emergency caused by COVID-19, all the instructions that regulate the modalities of educational activities and student evaluation will be implemented. In particular, the following modalities will be applied: remote teaching through the University's platforms (Moodle and Microsoft Teams).

Attendance

Attendance is not mandatory but particularly recommended. Not attending students have to study for the oral exam an additional text to choose from those indicated, for each module, in the section "Recommended texts".

Type of evaluation

The evaluation takes place through a final oral examination on the topics and texts considered during the course and an evaluation of the active participation in class and in group works. The study by students attending the course of one of the "Recommended Texts" will be properly taken into account for the evaluation of the exam. Not attending students are required to study an additional text to be chosen from those indicated, for each module, in the "Recommended Texts" section of this program. In the case of an extension of the health emergency caused by COVID-19, all the instructions that regulate the modalities of educational activities and student evaluation will be implemented. In particular, the following modalities will be applied: oral distance exams through the Microsoft Teams platform
