The course intends to deepen some significant themes of European history between the end of the fifteenth century and the first half of the seventeenth century. Particular attention will be paid to the religious, political, cultural and social conflicts that have led, through the birth, affirmation and development of the Protestant churches, to the fracture of Christianity, but also to the attempts that have been undertaken to reduce and heal this fracture

Programme

The course will first of all analyse the main issues concerning the political, religious, cultural and social structures that originated with the break-up of Christian unity in the first decades of the 16th century. Secondly, the religious experience of the controversial Dominican reformer Battista da Crema, active between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century, whose doctrine and works were condemned by ecclesiastical institutions, will be explored in depth through seminar lectures.
