Programme

The Geography of Maritime Spaces course aims to explore the sea not as a mere physical surface or strategic setting, but as a real space experienced, produced and imagined by human societies. Going beyond a merely confining vision, the programme focuses on the complex relationship between man and the sea, analysing how oceans, coasts and islands have been perceived, represented and transformed over time.
A key part of the course will be devoted to cultural geography, investigating the maritime imaginary through literature, historical cartography and local traditions. The identities of coastal communities, the routes that have woven global connections, and the symbolic meanings attributed to the aquatic world will be examined.
The educational journey will be enriched by a series of in-depth seminars. These interactive meetings will make it possible to analyse specific case studies: from the sustainable management of resources to the enhancement of maritime cultural heritage, to the new challenges posed by climate change on coastal areas. The aim is to provide students with critical tools for understanding maritime spaces as complex and dynamic territories, indispensable for reading the contemporary world.
