20730041 - Environmental history of contemporary Italy

teacher profile | teaching materials

Programme

Throughout the twentieth century, Italy too had to confront environmental transformations of enormous scope. This course will focus on how institutions, the scientific and technical community, sectors of civil society, and political forces have sought to understand and respond to the growing anthropogenic impacts on ecosystems and their consequences for human societies themselves. It will begin with the issues and attempted solutions that emerged from the end of the nineteenth century, focusing particularly on the post-World War II period. The course will highlight the interconnections between debates and policy-making concerning environmental issues, on the one hand, and the main turning points in the country's political life, on the other. The aim is to demonstrate the role that the environmental question played in Italian history in the last century.
