Programme

War, Violence, and Society: Narratives of the American Civil War and the Construction of National Identity

This course aims to demonstrate how cinema can serve as a source of historical knowledge, a tool for recounting the past, and an agent of history.
It acts as a source of historical insight into the era in which the film was produced, offering information about the ideas and values of the society that created it.

Since its inception, cinema has drawn upon historical content and events for its productions. Audiences have consistently shown a keen interest in historical narratives portrayed on screen. This course aims to demonstrate how cinema can serve as a source of historical knowledge, a tool for recounting the past, and an agent of history. It acts as a source of historical insight into the era in which the film was produced, offering information about the ideas and values of the society that created it.
When cinema is viewed as a tool for recounting the past, it enters the realm of the "public use of history"—a field where historians often compete with other professionals.
Finally, cinema can be considered an agent of history when examining its capacity to influence and shape behaviors, practices, passions, and identities.
Understanding these diverse cinematic languages and representations is an essential tool for historians specializing in cultural and social history—particularly those interested in how values, ideas, and representations of the past are transmitted across different eras. The course focuses on the cinematic and television representation of "War, Violence, and Society," contextualizing it within the American Civil War (1861–1865). It examines the various narratives of identity associated with the warring sides and the process of moving beyond the war within a newly reunified national framework.
