How to End a War: Strategies for Negotiation and Peacemaking in the Modern Age

In the modern age, the issues of war and peace, and of negotiations with parties both within and outside various political communities, were of particular importance and extended from the European continent to the wider world. It was a phenomenon that involved the whole of society, not just diplomats and the military. The tools and practices adopted by societies under the Ancien Régime formed a complex web of actions and theories, ranging from the establishment of the diplomatic apparatus to private negotiations within both judicial and extrajudicial contexts.

The course will explore issues relating to negotiation, pacification and war in early modern societies, analysing approaches and strategies for negotiation and pacification between Europe and the Americas, both in the diplomatic sphere and in the context of treaty-making, whilst examining theories and practices of war in depth.

The course will also include a reading of Immanuel Kant’s treatise on Perpetual Peace (1795) as a synthesis of the experience gained over the preceding centuries.
