The course aims to provide students with advanced knowledge of the terminology and fundamental issues in aesthetics, with a particular focus on one or more of the discipline’s most significant authors.
Students will be able to apply the knowledge they have acquired in discussion and argumentation from both a theoretical and a historical-philosophical perspective.
Students will have acquired:
- advanced critical thinking skills in relation to aesthetics;
- advanced language proficiency and argumentative skills in relation to the topics covered in the course;
- the ability to read and analyze texts;
- oral presentation of a report and/or preparation of written texts (in Italian or English)

Programme
The course begins with an introduction to Gilles Deleuze's philosophical thought, providing the conceptual framework necessary to understand his philosophy of cinema within the broader context of his work. The course then follows the structure of Cinema 1: The Movement-Image and Cinema 2: The Time-Image, examining the major theoretical concepts (movement-image, time-image, signs, perception, affection, action, and the crystal-image) through the discussion of selected films and examples from the history of cinema. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between philosophy and cinema as distinct yet interconnected modes of thought.Core Documentation

Assessment will consist of an oral examination designed to evaluate students' knowledge of the course content, their understanding of the main theoretical concepts, and their ability to discuss them critically and coherently. The examination will cover the two required texts, Cinema 1: The Movement-Image and Cinema 2: The Time-Image by Gilles Deleuze. Students will be expected to define and discuss the key concepts of Deleuze's philosophy of cinema and relate them to broader philosophical issues and cinematic examples.
