The student will get acquainted in the research sector named Mediterranean Archeology, developed in Northern Europe, and will become familiar with the theoretical approaches to Mediterranean studies and with the Mediterranean landscape long term history. In particular, he will be provided with insights on the archeology of the Greek polis and on the impact of the ancient Greek cities on their surroundings.

The dynamics and transformations of landscape and territory, the human-environment relationship, the organisation of human settlement, and the perception, use, and representation of space are investigated across different historical periods up to the present day, with the awareness that landscape is in continuous becoming — within the perspective of a diachronic reading of the archaeological landscape between memory and design.

The concepts of space, time, place, and landscape.
Intrasite analysis (site, settlement, dwelling). Internal organisation of settlements, quantitative analysis and distribution maps, traces of the past in modern settlements and highly anthropised areas.
Micro-regional and regional analysis. The concept of region, history of studies, settlement models, diachronic and comparative approaches.
The dimensions of the anthropic-cultural landscape. Rural landscapes, urban landscapes, sacred and funerary landscapes; landscapes of production, communication networks, mountain and peripheral landscapes, archaeology of pastoralism; landscape and demography, symbolic and perceptual landscapes, landscapes of power.
Landscape between memory and design. Contemporary meanings of past landscapes.

Programme
The course will focus on the themes of Mediterranean landscape archaeology through an examination of the relevant international literature and examples of critical, comparative, and integrated reading of surface survey data and palaeoenvironmental evidence. It will open with reflections on the Mediterranean as a research context and on the diverse 'archaeologies in the Mediterranean' from a critical perspective.
