The course “Geography of Maritime Spaces: Environment and Sustainability” aims to provide knowledge of marine and coastal systems by analyzing their environmental, economic, and geopolitical dynamics. Students will acquire the tools to understand issues related to sustainability, resource management, and climate change, while developing the ability to critically analyze maritime territories and policies for the protection and enhancement of ecosystems.

A key part of the course will be devoted to cultural geography, investigating the maritime imaginary through literature, historical cartography and local traditions. The identities of coastal communities, the routes that have woven global connections, and the symbolic meanings attributed to the aquatic world will be examined.
The educational journey will be enriched by a series of in-depth seminars. These interactive meetings will make it possible to analyse specific case studies: from the sustainable management of resources to the enhancement of maritime cultural heritage, to the new challenges posed by climate change on coastal areas. The aim is to provide students with critical tools for understanding maritime spaces as complex and dynamic territories, indispensable for reading the contemporary world.

The Geography of Maritime Spaces course aims to explore the sea not as a mere physical surface or strategic setting, but as a real space experienced, produced and imagined by human societies.
