21210129 - Development economics

The purpose of this course is to provide students with analytical and empirical tools apt to build up an advanced and solid understanding of economic development processes. This objective will be pursued by connecting the theory to public policy issues at global level, international development cooperation and field level issues and key elements. The introduction of different approaches, and their firm connection within an interdisciplinary and critical perspective, is intended to lay the ground for the skills needed to contribute in the area of international development both at desk, field and analysis level

Type of evaluation

During the course, students who wish to take part in the project will be required to sit a one-hour written test designed to assess the knowledge and skills acquired during the first part of the course. The test will cover economic growth, inequality, and poverty. Students who pass the written test will be eligible to take part in the project, which will be developed in collaboration with the instructor. As the final assessment requirement, they will prepare and deliver a comprehensive presentation of the project’s main findings and outcomes. The presentation should clearly communicate the research question, the methodology adopted, the data and empirical analysis conducted, the main results, and the implications of the findings. For non-attending students, the examination will consist of an in-depth oral examination covering the entire course syllabus.
