Mirko Sossai is Associate Professor of international law at the Law Department of Roma Tre University. Previously, he was research fellow at the Faculty of Law of the LUISS Guido Carli university (2006-08).
He obtained the national scientific qualification to function as full professor in Italian Universities (2020).
He holds a PhD in international law and EU law from the University of Siena (2005) and a degree cum laude in international relations from the University of Padua (2001).

Didattica

He currently teaches public international law, law of international organizations and advanced international law at the Department of Law of the Roma Tre University. Between 2012 and 2018, he offered a course in English on international human rights law.
He is a member of the Academic board of the PhD programme in legal studies of the Law Department, Roma Tre University.

Ricerca

His research interests focus on human rights, international humanitarian law and the law of international organizations, including the topic of the access to justice in international law. Professor Sossai has a long-standing interest in the responsibility and accountability of non-state actors for human rights violations, particularly with respect to the due diligence obligations of the private sector. His publications on the international regulation of private military and security companies (PMSCs) have been widely cited by leading academics in the field and by expert of international and non-governmental organizations.
He has been co-rapporteur of the study group of the ILA (International Law Association) on the topic ‘UN sanctions and international law’. He is currently a member of the ILA study group on ‘the role of cities in international law’.
He is member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Conflict and Security Law (Oxford University Press).
Between 2013 and 2016, he was a member of the research unit of the Roma Tre University, within the framework of the FIRB research project ‘International Disaster Law’ (project number n. RBFR12Y56K).
He was member of the Management Team of ‘PRIV-WAR’ (Regulating privatisation of “war”: the role of the EU in assuring the compliance with international humanitarian law and human rights), supported within the 7th Framework Research Programme by the European Commission DG Research (2008-2011. EU contribution: €1.138.682 https://priv-war.eui.eu/ - FP7 success story: https://cordis.europa.eu/article/id/90165-rtd-success-stories-the-business-of-war).
He took part to the first international research project on the issue of transparency in international law (coordinated by Anne Peters and Andrea Bianchi), financed by the Swiss government (2011-12).
At LUISS Guido Carli he participated in the activities of the research unit coordinated by Prof. Natalino Ronzitti on the topic “Access to justice and compensation for violations of the law of war” (PRIN 2005).
In 2006 he participated in the annual programme of the Centre for Studies and Research in International Law, hosted by the Hague Academy of International Law (The Hague, NL), where he drafted a report on ‘EU Counter-Terrorism Action and Due Process Guarantees’.
He had research stays at the Max Planck Institut für ausländisches öffentliches Recht und Völkerrecht, Heidelberg between January-April 2003 and July 2004.
